The animal unit is a major tool provided for researchers.

Every animal accommodation or experimental unit provides users with high-quality accommodation which respects health and status rules.

In this context, apart from the genotype, it is important to be able to control environmental factors which will influence the constancy of the animal's phenotype and the protocols.

Because it is consumed daily, diet is a key influential factor.

In short, no traceability equals no diet safety!

Traceability consists of following the route taken by the diet all the way back up the line: from the agronomic origin of the cereals to delivery in your region. This is particularly important with the globalisation of exchanges.

For example, the mad cow crisis of 1996 had an impact as far as Japan - and other known crises are still in the news (bird 'flu for example), while yet others are already the target of finger-pointing (mycotoxins).

Traceability, via diets substances, is therefore a core requirement for your Study protection.

The SAFE global traceability system gives you clear, fast answers.

If necessary, it can also be used to develop a specific action plan with you.

At the end of this chain, you have the right to know the source of the product you are using so that you can control your experiments as far as possible.

  • Laboratory diet means, first of all, basic ingredients, traced and selected for laboratory application (not for use in zoos or on farms).
  • Laboratory diet means safe, controlled ingredients with maximum diets, health and veterinary constancy.
  • It begins with high-level cereal farmers, capable of respecting baby food specifications to the letter.

this means:

- Production plots individually monitored by headquarters. Their history (2 years before the current crop), environment and storage are completely traced.

- Use of pesticides reduced to a strict minimum; every stage in the growing process is validated by an agronomic technician.

- Particularly strict analytical tests of substances which may have a direct or indirect influence on the animal's phenotype and therefore your studies. For example, the test sheet provided with each tested and certified food (C) systematically includes more than 162 analytical points to be covered before release(physiochemical, bacteriological, mycotoxic etc.).

  • Laboratory diet means an irreproachable and traced industrial process: SAFE keeps all its production data for every item of diets and special diet for 12 years. If you wish, SAFE can supply you with the same diets 12 years after it was first produced!
  • Laboratory diet must be free of cross-contamination! This means that it can only be produced safely on an industrial site which is totally dedicated to laboratory production: This is the major choice which SAFE made (see newsletter for May 2006 available on this website).
  • Diets traceability is only meaningful if you control the whole chain. This is why SAFE does not use industrial subcontractors (source of grey areas, breaks in traceability and constancy).
  • For your safety, SAFE is the "Author, Composer and Performer" of the whole production process for your diets and special research diets.
